Dan Liebermann studied with Frank Lloyd Wright and moved to California to work on the Marin Civic Center, designed by Mr. Wright. In California, Aaron Greene, who worked closely with Wright, and with Joseph Eichler to lay out a subdivision that paid attention to the landscape, sun and wind. He’s taught at San Francisco Institue of Architecture and UC Berkeley.
John first met Dan when we worked on one of his projects almost twenty years ago, and Dan has been a friend and mentor since. This weekend we went out to visit Dan at the home he’s building in Pt. Reyes. Kelly met Dan and saw his work for the first time.
Dan explains his concepts to Kelly
Dan was a green architect and builder long before the word was ever used. He has a subtle and deep respect for topography and landscape and highly developed spacial design.
Dan is building his house, as he often has on past projects, from recycled materials and wood from the site. The area was destroyed by fire, and Dan’s terraced the hillside to divert winds and shaped the buildings to sit comfortably in the slipstream.
The interiors have complex and subtle spacial arrangements based upon a radial structure and curving exterior walls that extend into the landscape.
